Apostle Romney visited Guatemala City, I think in 1964. Here he is seen on the right with Mission President Leslie O. Brewer on the left. Brother Romney interviewed each missionary that day. I think that there were about 40 of us in the city.
Sometime after the first of the year I was transferred into the Mission Office and lived in the Mission Home with the Brewers. Here are some of us. Left to right, Steven Smith, Elder Pugmire, President Brewer, Sister Brewer, Glen Brush, Richard Johnson, and myself.
Does anyone besides me remember when Exxon was still called Esso? This is somewhere in Guatemala City. I got out of the Mission Office quite a bit because one of my jobs was to obtain visas for the missionaries to travel to and from Guatemala.
< | I liked this bench at a bus stop. I never drove. Too many stories about foreigners like me ending up in the calaboose. We could go anywhere in the city for 5 cents.
I can't remember where in the city this little park was.
Another view of the park, with a residential district behind it, and the mountains in the distance. Guatemala city sits at about 4000 ft, and is ringed by mountains and volcanoes. It was hot during the day and cold at night in the winter. I once baptized people for the sisters, a couple of families, and I almost froze to death because it was night, the font was outside, and it was COLD.
Easter Procession in Guatemala City, 1964.
Easter Procession. At least some of these floats carried icons from the local cathedrals.
I believe the men who carried the floats where very honored to do it, but I don't know how they were chosen. |
